25 Best Kids Books to Teach Social-Emotional Skills

The next section offers lessons on flower arranging…my personal favorite way to liven up any space in the home. The Before & Afters are my favorite part. You can’t go wrong with a B&A, they’re fun if they’re inspiring and funny if they’re disastrous.

In this playful tale from bestselling picture book author Patrick McDonnell, a very BIG monster shows three very BAD little monsters the power of boundless gratitude. Do special needs for one mean less love for another? This is the question explored in this short children’s story of three zoo animals. They learn that being equally loved doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re treated the exact same. Whether it’s petting a dog or waving goodbye to a parent, Krensky and Gillingham address the “small wins” of growing just a little bit braver.

About Grace Bonney

Goodreads is the world's largest site for readers with over 50 million reviews. We're featuring millions of their reader ratings on our book pages to help you find your new favourite book. "Bonney's book is a 'how-to' guide for great design. Not only is it beautiful to look at, there are tons of design ideas on every page." The essential idea of this book is to show the reader how to create a home that reflects their personality and makes them happy. It’ll even give you ideas for stenciling your accent wall and wrapping your gifts in reclaimed maps. But even though I bought this book shortly after it came out, I’m already starting to find it dated.

"A one-stop book for inspiration and practical guidance."

I would love to own this book because I it would be nice to have a design book that I would love to look at for inspiration not only for work but for my home too. I’d love to win the book because I have an empty coffee table that would love something beautiful to share its time with. An inspiring interior design book, with an entire section dedicated to DIY projects. Do you love looking at interior design blogs? If you answered yes then you are going to enjoy this book. Beautiful and very inspiring living spaces, but really doesn't present anything new.

Bonney has already inspired her readers with her blog and now she created a book to do so. I fully intend to give it a careful read five or ten years from now and have a good laugh. By then I’ll see which ideas stand the test of time, the things that may be overdone and ubiquitous now but still have longterm resonance. For now, this will just sit on my bookshelf – real, not wallpaper. Did you know you can make cake plates by gluing a saucer on a candlestick? Unless you’ve been living under a DIY rock this past year, I bet you did.

We use the Design Sponge blog and twitter posts regularly for inspiration, examples, and references. A product students could have in hand would be another great addition to their learning experience. As a speech-language pathologist, I occasionally work with kids that lack social communication skills. I love to use books as examples to teach certain skills and illustrate emotions.

A little girl rescues a strange beast in the woods and carries him safely home. But the beast is not happy and escapes! A funny and charming tale about seeing both sides of the story. These books help kids to understand and navigate the difficult world of emotions and social communication skills. Not my style or inspiration, not great instruction. Good if you like vintage/19th century/rustic home style.

It’d be nice to have this awesome book to help me gather and assemble my creative thoughts. I’m always looking for new inspiration! Thanks for running the giveaway Jess . This giveaway is only open to Australian residents (sorry lovely international readers!).

As a perpetual student of design, I can’t think of a better way to honor and appreciate such amazing talent and ideas. And let it serve as something to aspire to in my future. It even had instructions for basic flower arrangements, a much overlooked but useful skill in design.

What Our Readers Are Saying

With over 700 color photos and illustrations and projects that are customizable, relatable, and affordable, this is the democratizing design book everyone has been waiting for. That said, much of the text seemed self-serving or insignificant. (I suggest you do what I did.) The photos were the important part, after all. “Now wait just a minute,” I can hear you say. I don’t have any chandeliers and I have never painted a single thing with chalkboard paint. I don’t read this Sponge Therapy blog or whatever it’s called.

Remarkably, most homes not only incorporated books and libraries as design elements they also focused on and celebrated living with shelves and stacks of books. The value of such books is in their photos, and there's enough here for your eye to wander through to keep you happy. A large number of excellent homes from diverse and quirky people illustrate a ...
